There are a couple of aspects that I learned in school at the Environmental Research Station thru the University of Arizona that I wanted to apply here. They work a lot with testing and quantifying passive cooling and heating systems integrated into actual buildings. Granted this happens in the high desert of Tucson, but the ideas lend themselves readily to Seattle where we are from. Essentially, the whole house was designed to cool itself through the movement of warm air rising actively through the center and leaving from the roof deck door. When there is heat gain from the sun in the winter the fan can circulate it and the house can be closed up to contain the accumulated warmth. Each floor is a separate heating zone.
It starts by sheltering the entry to the house towards the north. In this case it's also helps, because the wind and rain in Leschi comes from south and east in the winter. The windows used in the house are all low e and argon filled which helps shield out the worst of the UV and they are reflective and insulated to keep out some of the heat gain. But they do allow for some moderate solar gain in the winter we found last year. The fan in the atrium helps circulate the air. Because the 2 story space can add to the solar gain, by allowing it to go up the 2 stories (not just for the view), it also allows that volume of air to rise and using the Venturi affect move into the hallway and up the stairs to the roof deck. The center stair is deliberately placed to also pull air up from all of the 2nd floor (and the adjacent stair to the first level from below). This is then pulled up to the 3rd stair to the deck when the temperature differential is such that it will work-ie anytime you accumulate warm air in the house. The more warm air the more movement. We have also found that on the warmer days, the east door on the 2nd floor can add to the volume of air movement. What I appreciated so much is that it works so well in Seattle, when it was warm/hot this summer. If the house was closed up, we could arrive and open the deck door and watch the temperature go down over about an hour. Also, the privacy of the deck allowed for us to just leave the door open day and night when it is warm and it acts like the cooling chimney or tower that it was designed to be. In the winter, the windows of the reading/yoga room can be opened to allow for a smaller amount of air to directly circulate, if desired. These smaller windows are on the north side and the rain generally comes from the south. (It's good to remember, tho', that the snow storms come from the north).
The deck door is sheltered under the eave and we have been up there and just watched it rain from the shelter of the open door. There is a copper rain deflector at the roof there so the roof rain doesn't hit you at the door on the deck-it acts like a small gutter to the sides. The deck itself if slightly sloped for the rain to run off to the gutter there.
The house is basically a passive solar house with an active ventilation system. That means that the windows are operable almost everywhere and the active cooling tower/chimney directly cools the house. The in floor heating system allows for warmth throughout the entire zone and can be set accordingly.
P.S. Just in case-there is a casement window deliberately placed in the atrium that can be opened and used for a portable air conditioner if global warming overtakes us....
